TSJ’s Shawarma recipe

Yeah, yeah! Everyone rants about how unhealthy fast foods are, shawarma included but we all secretly love them and overindulge!

Is shawarma really unhealthy though?

I feel it depends on the angle from which you are looking at it. I mean, it’s a yummy meal made with some veggies (cabbage, carrots and even bell pepper sometimes), appropriately backed with some correct proteins and bread. All the afore mentioned bring their fair share of nutrients to the table.

Well, the only worries about shawarma for me is the addition of sausages, and yes, they are sort of unhealthy, but they taste so yummy in the mix. If you would however prefer an alternative with less health risks, you could substitute them for French fries. They are considered a tad healthier.

The truth is you can own your shawarma!

Yes, you can make it healthy enough for you to devour in the comfort of your home. If it makes you feel better, simply call it healthy wraps. What makes the difference really, is the constituent of your filling.

Permit to share with you one of the yummiest, mind blowing sharwarma recipes you would ever come across.

This one is proven and tested by all who have blessed their taste buds with it. Stay with me on this one.

  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1tsp Paprika pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Suya spice
  • 4 Sausages
  • Cooked meat cubes (100g)
  • Cooked chicken breast cubes (100g)
  • Cabbage (Half of one medium sized)
  • Carrots (4 fingers)
  • Half of one Large Red bell pepper (optional)
  • Half of one Large Yellow bell pepper (optional)
  • Minced meat (200g)
  • Cheese slices (4)
  • Lemon juice (2 tsp)

STEPS

1. We start off with cooking any prerequisites. Chop some onions, bell peppers into little chunks and glaze lightly with some salt

2. Place your minced meat in a bowl, and add some hot water to sort of sterilize and de odorize it. (Yes, guys biko, I know some people would argue about rinsing minced meat, but I can’t deal. I find that this hot water regimen helps to reduce the odor that comes with it after cooking)

3. In a clean frying pan, add a few tablespoons of cooking oil, follow with your onions and bell pepper, squeeze a bit of your Gino paste and mix it all up before bringing your sterilized minced meat into the picture.

4. Don’t forget to add your seasoning (Bouillion cubes for taste, paprika pepper and suya spice)

5. Leave minced meat mix to simmer till well cooked and then set aside.

6. In a clean bowl de-skin your carrots and rinse, then grate into tiny shreds.

7. Also rinse and cut your cabbage up into shreds and mix together with the carrots in a bowl, then set aside.

8. In another pan, put in a few table spoons of oil and throw in your diced, precooked meat and chicken breasts cubes along with your sausages and season with suya spice and paprika pepper alone.

9. Let it simmer for 2-3 mins before taking the proteins out and setting aside.

10. It’s time to make your sharwarma cream, it’s quite easy you see. Trust me this cream makes all the difference and takes your wraps from a zero to 1000 with the snap of a finger. Get a clean container and start the heavenly mix.

11. Items needed for this creamy goodness include some Mayonnaise, ketchup, Greek youghurt, a little milk for extra cream, lemon juice and some chilli sauce. Be generous guys! You can’t be an economist with your cream please.

12. When your cream is well mixed, split it into 2 and set one half aside.

13. In the other cream bowl, throw in your carrot and cabbage mix, cooked minced meat, sausage, meat and chicken

14. Get out your sharwarma bread and carefully open it up.

15. Spread some cream around the bread, be generous guys and then line up your filling (cabbage, carrots, minced meat, sausage or fries, meat, chicken)

16. Add your final topping (shredded cheese)

17. Wrap nicely, tucking in the ends gently

18. Use your grilling pan or woke to heat up the bread on all sides

And you are done my loves, indulge in some yummy goodness today! You won’t regret it
